Founded in 2009 by Dr. Brent C. Peterson Ph.D., M.S., L.P.C., A.T.R., Assessment & Counseling of Williamsburg PLC serves people from age 6-90. Individual patients and families benefit from their teams' expertise in art therapy, counseling, psychological testing, and forensic assessment.
Computerized neurocognitive testing is one particularly helpful tool to make a correct primary diagnosis, but patients also come to get tested to confirm or resolve questions about a prior diagnosis. The testing system provides a “nuts and bolts” of how the brain works and is the gold standard for detecting ADHD and a host of other mental health conditions. Testing literally (physically) maps which areas of the brain perform normally and which are not. A correct diagnosis makes positive treatment outcomes far more likely.
The forensic side of the practice works with the Virginia court system to determine parental capacity and child custody, i.e. whether or not a child’s environment is likely to be free from abuse and neglect.
Dr. Peterson’s initial inspiration stemmed from a 5 ½ year journey with spinal meningitis as a teen and young adult. The team that tended to him was characterized by such genuine caring that he decided he wanted to devote himself to ending sorrow and suffering in others. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Utah, Masters at EVMS and PH.D at The Florida State University. His team is filled out with Maxi Trent MS and fellow EVMS graduate Catherine Le Vie MS.
Dr. Peterson is married and has a daughter, Jade. Fun fact: He and his daughter perform together on the violin for retirement homes and their church.
